Hair Care Routine According to Different Hair Types
1. Oily Hair
Description: A scalp that produces oil quickly, leaving hair greasy and flat within a day or two of washing.
Routine:
- Washing: Every 1–2 days with a lightweight, clarifying or balancing shampoo.
- Conditioner: Apply only to the ends, avoiding the scalp.
- Extra care: A deep-cleansing clay or mud mask once a week to control oil production.
- Styling: Avoid touching hair frequently, as this stimulates more oil.
2. Dry Hair
Description: Hair lacking natural moisture, appearing rough, dull, and prone to breakage.
Routine:
- Washing: Only 2–3 times a week with a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo.
- Conditioner: A rich conditioner after every wash, left on for a few minutes.
- Extra care: A deep hydrating mask or natural oil (argan, coconut) once or twice a week.
- Styling: Always use heat protectant and minimize hot styling tools.
3. Wavy Hair
Description: Falls between straight and curly, prone to frizz and losing its wave pattern.
Routine:
- Washing: Every 2–3 days with a lightweight shampoo that preserves natural waves.
- Conditioner: A medium-hydration conditioner, combed through in the shower to define waves.
- Extra care: A wave-defining cream or mousse applied to damp hair.
- Styling: Air-dry or use a diffuser to prevent frizz.
4. Curly and Coily Hair
Description: Needs extra moisture since natural oils struggle to travel from roots to ends.
Routine:
- Washing: "Co-washing" (conditioner-only washing) or shampoo once a week at most.
- Conditioner: A rich, deep-conditioning treatment left on longer than usual.
- Extra care: The "LOC" or "LCO" method (Liquid-Oil-Cream) to lock in moisture.
- Styling: Detangle while wet using fingers or a wide-tooth comb; avoid dry brushing.
5. Colored or Chemically Treated Hair
Description: Weaker hair structure with higher porosity, making it prone to dryness and color fading.
Routine:
- Washing: A sulfate-free shampoo made for colored hair, using lukewarm—not hot—water.
- Conditioner: Alternate light protein treatments with moisture to strengthen without stiffening.
- Extra care: A color-protecting serum with UV protection.
- Styling: Minimize heat and electric styling tools as much as possible.
6. Fine or Thin Hair
Description: Low-density hair that flattens easily and loses volume quickly.
Routine:
- Washing: A volumizing shampoo, avoiding heavy products.
- Conditioner: A lightweight conditioner applied only to the ends.
- Extra care: A root-lifting spray for added volume.
- Styling: Flip-drying (drying with head tilted down) to boost fullness.
